Aldonis Kalnins was born in Uzava near Ventspils on 26 February 1928. He is respected both as a composer and musicologist. He graduated from Utkin&s composition class at the Ręga Conservatory in 1954. In 1959 he became an editor for the publishing house of Liesma. He has participated in several folklore expeditions for the Latvian Academy of Sciences and has notated more than 1000 Latvian folksong melodies. A notable of Latvian choral music, he has produced many richly developed arrangements of Latvian folksong melodies for choir and for instrumental ensemble. In his choral works he has succeeded in fusing Impressionist harmonic language with the melodic material of Latvian folk music
