Shojojee

Shojojee is the name of a Japanese temple. It is also the name of a raccoon-like animal with a big stomach! This traditional Japanese piece is easy and very effective. The repetitive Japanese text is not difficult to master. Handbells, hand chimes or any pitched mallet instrument add color along with a small drum. Originally arranged for a college tour of Japan, the range will allow middle-school choirs to perform the piece if they eliminate the occasional tenor doubling of the bass.

Emily Dickinson's poem is treated to a whimsical, rhythmic setting that dances along in 6/8 meter, with an occasional feeling of three or a 2/4 measure inserted to throw it off for just a moment.
