The repertoire listed below for Senior Choirs was selected by Dr. Victoria Meredith, author of SING BETTER AS YOU AGE, published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing. The title of this award winning book could have been AGE BETTER AS YOU SING. Here are some quotes from experts in the health field:
Studies have linked singing with stress reduction, a lower heart rate, and lower blood pressure. Patricia Preston Roberts of Glen Ridge, NJ, co-leader of music psychotherapy groups at New York University
Communal singing is good for mind and body. As well as burning off 150 calories an hour, it improves breathing and muscle tone, alleviates depression, stammering, stress, low self-esteem, asthma and chronic pain. Researchers at the University of Newcastle
In a 3-year study entitled "Creativity and Aging" Dr. Gene Cohen of George Washington University studied the health-related effects of 3 types of artistic activities (painting, writing, and choral singing) with participants between the ages of 65 and 100 years. In all 3 activities -- including choral singing -- major health benefits were
reported, including: fewer falls and less hip damage, fewer doctor's visits, less use of medication, diminished vision problems, less depression and loneliness, increased involvement in other activities. Other changes notices by the participants were: improvement in speaking voices, a younger tone quality, easier breathing, fewer aches
and better posture.
At the University of California, Irvine, researchers measured levels of Immunoglobulin A (a disease-fighting protein) in the saliva of choral singers before and after rehearsals and performance of the Beethoven 'Missa Solemnis'. These saliva studies showed that the immune system rose 150% during rehearsals and 240% during performance from a baseline level . . . the more passionate a singer feels, the more this effect is heightened.
Victoria Meredith's criteria in selecting the titles recommended for Senior Adult Choirs: * conservative ranges
* tessitura not too long in the upper range
* uncomplicated rhythms without a lot of rhythmic independence between parts
* lack of dynamic extremes (especially very loud)
* generally conjunct writing with predictable larger leaps
* manageable phrase lengths

Will there really be a morning?
Is there such a thing as day?
Could I see it from the mountains
If I were as tall as they?
Has it feet like water-lilies?
Has it feathers like a bird?
Is it brought from famous countries
Of which I have never heard?
Oh, some scholar! Oh, some sailor!
Oh, some wise man from the skies!
Please to tell a little pilgrim

Sulle MulleAlo Ritsing- ed. Vance Wolverton
The last thing I expected to find in Estonia was Barbershop-style singing, but that is exactly what "Sulle Mulle" is. The infectious dotted rhythm of the melody is underlaid by an equally infectious rhythmic ostinato in the lower parts. "Sulle Mulle" should be sung with great gusto and highly exaggerated pronunciation for optimal effect.
