Long Time Trav’ling
Sacred Harp tunes, arr. Abbie Betinis
This piece is a real musical trip! Adding excitement to the choral rendition are two tenors who join in at the beginning as they ride high-flying above the choir. Reflecting the shape-note performance tradition, the composer next cleverly weaves solfege syllables into the fabric of the tunes; and in one section, we hear the distant sounds of a chain gang creating an underlay to the song. There’s a whole lot happening here. Singers will love this piece.

Bulgarian folk song, arr. Sara Shakliyan
The Bulgarian/American composer has chosen a fun-filled popular folk song from her native land to set for the adventuresome choir. The Bulgarian text is quite repetitive and the pronunciation easy since the vowels are pure as in Italian with the exception of one word. Fast and dance like, the piece starts innocently and ends in a giant flourish.

Song at Dusk

Much like a vocal tone poem, the colors brought forth in this piece, along with the soaring melodies, dramatically illuminate the poem by Leigh Haynes, once poet laureate of the state of Virginia. Divisi in all parts, it is recommended for the advanced high school or college ensemble.
