Winner of the 2010 American Choral Directors Association Raymond W. Brock Memorial Student Composition Contest, the piece was premiered to great acclaim at the 2011 ACDA National Convention. Set to a poem by Alfred Tennyson, the poet used the metaphor of an ocean sand bar to describe the barrier between life and death. An elegant piece for the mature choir.

Dancing Tree [level: Easy]
Nancy Gifford
voicing: SA | catalog number: SBMP 814 | duration: 2:10
| price: $2.10
accompaniment: piano
Dancing Tree is a fanciful and exuberantly happy piece for young voices. The verse begins,In my garden grows a treeDances day and night for me,Four in a bar and sometimes three,To music secret as can be.Taking its cues from this simple but inspired poetry, the piece alternates between duple and triple meters, with light waltzing sections, a Latin dance, and finally a grand valse. Three lyrical melodies are woven together throughout the piece; they are sung separately, in pairs, and all together at the end. In between, a sprightly theme in minor mode appears, accompanied by syncopated rhythms in the piano and flute. All in all, fun to sing, and delightful to hear.

BEST SELLER
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 1046 | duration: 2:00
| price: $2.40
accompaniment: a cappella
The then 17 year old composer was in a canoe fishing with his dad in Colorado when the inspiration for this great piece began. The music draws from the “shape-note” singing tradition featuring a hearty, strong sound, an imitative fuging section, melodic ornaments, open intervals, and doubling at the octave. It is unusual, in that the melody is in the bass part. The text by the composer draws on the hymn-writing style of the great theologians of the shape-note tradition, while it proclaims a more contemporary message of environmental stewardship. It has had an extensive pre-publication life that included performances by Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, the Christmas Revels, Village Harmony, and Northern Harmony.
