 Sam Ritter

Sam Ritter (b.1990) is a doctoral student and associate instructor from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. His major field of study is in choral conducting with minors in composition and music theory. His principal professors of composition have been Daniel Musselman and P.Q. Phan. Ritter holds a B.M. in Piano Performance from Union University (2012). In his final year of undergraduate study, his a cappella setting of a Rosetti text entitled “Lament Not, My Dearest” was performed in the Vanguard Premieres Choral Composition Competition in Dearborn, Michigan, USA. Ritter then served in Rome, Italy as the director of choral music at la Roma Battista Chiesa Evangelica and sang with the New Chamber Singers and il Coro da Camera Italiano. Ritter received a M.M. in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma City University in 2016. While there, he was the assistant director of mainstage productions Suor Angelica and Evita. At Indiana University, he has been the associate conductor for the premier contemporary vocal ensemble, NOTUS, in addition to the associate chorus master for The Music Man. In the 2017-2018 season, he will take part in conducting and preparing Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion, Bernstein’s West Side Story, and Jake Heggie’s It’s a Wonderful Life
