 Sam Ritter

Sam Ritter (b.1990) is a doctoral candidate at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. His major field of study is in choral conducting with minors in both composition and music theory. His principal professors of composition have been Daniel Musselman, Sven-David Sandström and P.Q. Phan. His doctoral final project, a piece for chorus and orchestra entitled The Mourning Jewels, will be defended in the spring of 2020.

Ritter has been a prize winner in the “Vanguard Premieres” Choral Composition Competition in 2012, and has also been a finalist in the “Caritas International Emerging Composers Competition” in 2018 and 2019. Based in Canterbury, Kent, the Caritas Chamber Choir have included both his works written for them on their albums, “A Caritas Collection,” Volumes I and II. Ritter is currently working on a commission that follows the same model as Holst’s “Planets,” to be premiered by Caritas in 2020.

At Indiana University, Ritter has been the associate conductor for the premier contemporary vocal ensemble, NOTUS, the University Singers, and the University Chorale. Ritter has prepped choruses for mainstage productions of Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion, Jake Heggie’s It’s a Wonderful Life, West Side Story, The Music Man, Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. He premiered a new student opera as Music Director of the New Voices Opera in 2017, and is an advocate and enthusiast for new music. Currently, he is the director of choirs at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Bloomington, Indiana. In his free time, you can find Ritter biking or playing ultimate frisbee, never too far from a cup of coffee.
