Robert T. Townsend is a professor at Indiana Wesleyan University. He has a Bachelor of Music Degree (piano and K-12 music teaching license) from Western Michigan University, Master of Music Education degree from Indiana University-Bloomington and completed the Ph.D. (Secondary Education) at the University of Illinois. Robert has 15 years of public and private school (P-12) music teaching experience and over 18 years of university teaching and administration experience having held positions at IUPUI, Northern Illinois and Wayne State universities as well as a teaching assistant position at the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana. In addition, he serves as executive producer/conductor for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis’ Annual Gospel Concert. His church music experience extends back to an early age as a pianist, organist, director, and minister of music in many churches throughout Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky, Georgia, and Indiana. He also serves as Co-Founder/Artistic Director of The Performing Arts Conservatory; a program helping youth to perfect their gifts and talents in dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music (www.tpacindy.org) in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area.
Robert began arranging vocal and instrumental music at the age of 12 for junior high school band and for his church. He continued arranging and composing through his college years and is the composer of the Kentucky State University Fight Song. Robert began working for the Indianapolis Children's Choir in 2000. His choral works began to be published through Henry Leck’s series at Hal Leonard. In addition, he has published through the Ruth Dwyer choral series at Colla Voce. He also has collaborated with Stacey V. Gibbs on works published at Gentry, Santa Barbara, and Pavane. Robert continues to arrange and compose vocal and orchestral music for The Performing Arts Conservatory ensembles, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis, and other schools, universities, and churches. He resides in Indiana with his wife, Bridget.
