CoverChrysopylae [level: Medium]
Dominick DiOrio: Bio and other works | International Orange Chorale Choral Series
voicing: SATB div. | catalog number: SBMP 1099 | price: $2.60
accompaniment: a cappella

Not every bridge has a song written for it! The title translates Golden Gate—the piece honors the Golden Gate Bridge and was premiered in celebration of the bridge’s 75th birthday. The intense drama of the music reflects that of this famous American landmark. This is an outstanding piece for the adept choir.

Lux ecce surgit aurea (Behold the light of gold rises)
– Excerpt from a hymn by Prudentius (348-413)

At last the mighty task is done;
Resplendent in the western sun
The Bridge looms mountain high;
Its titan piers grip ocean floor,
Its great steel arms link shore with shore,
Its towers pierce the sky.

– Excerpt from “The Mighty Task is Done”
by Joseph Baermann Strauss (1870-1938)

Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!
Bright and yellow, hard and cold,
Molten, graven, hammer'd, and roll'd;
Heavy to get, and light to hold;
Hoarded, barter'd, bought and sold,
Stolen, borrow'd, squander'd, doled:
Spurn'd by the young, but hugg'd by the old
To the very verge of the churchyard mould;
Price of many a crime untold;
Gold! Gold! Gold! Gold!

– Excerpt from “Gold! ”
by Thomas Hood (1799-1845)

Vast shafts of steel, wave-battered pier,
And all the splendor meant to be;
Wind-swept and free, these, year on year,
Shall chant my hymn of Victory!

– Excerpt from “The Golden Gate Bridge”
by Joseph Baermann Strauss (1870-1938)
