Herbert Washington
- The Phoenix Boys Choir - NEW CHORAL SERIES
Herbert Washington began his tenure as the Harvey K. Smith Artistic Director of the Phoenix Boys Choir in 2019. An alumnus of the choir, he leads one of the nation’s distinguished youth ensembles, which has been featured on two GRAMMY-winning projects. Deeply grounded in Arizona choral pedagogy, he is widely recognized for his dynamic teaching style and is an active choral clinician, conductor, lecturer, and adjudicator, regularly leading festivals and conferences nationwide. He is also co-founder of The Choral Window, an international resource for directors that shares innovative techniques to enhance music literacy and energize rehearsals, reflecting his commitment to advancing the choral art form beyond the podium.
While working toward his undergraduate degree at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, Mr. Washington performed as a tenor, countertenor, and soloist with the renowned St. Olaf Choir under the direction of Dr. Anton Armstrong, and he directed Voices of Praise, the St. Olaf Gospel Choir. He earned a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Fine Arts from St. Olaf College before continuing his studies at the University of Arizona under the mentorship of Dr. Elizabeth Schauer and Dr. Bruce Chamberlain. There, he founded the university’s award-winning male ensemble Meow or Never A Cappella (formerly known as Cat Call) and graduated with a Master of Music in Choral Conducting in 2009.
Beyond traditional choral music education, Mr. Washington is a champion and advocate for diverse musical styles. He remains active in producing, composing, and arranging radio and commercial music, and has collaborated with leaders in the music industry, including GRAMMY Award-winning artists Tori Kelly, Jordin Sparks, Bret Michaels, and Jason Derulo.
Mr. Washington has served in a variety of church, school, and community music leadership roles, directing choirs across elementary, middle, high school, and youth ensemble settings. He continues to lead vibrant choral programs in both sacred and educational communities.
He is an active member of AMEA and a former ACDA Western Division board member, having also served in state-level repertoire leadership for children’s and community youth choirs.
Herbert resides in Phoenix with his wife, Yadira, and their sons, Elian and Yadian.
