Stephen Dombek
Stephen Dombek was born in 1953 in Warsaw, Indiana. After receiving a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Grace College, he earned Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Indiana University Jacob School of Music where he studied composition with Bernard Heiden, Harvey Sollberger and Earle Brown.
While at Indiana University, Dombek was an Associate Instructor in music theory and authored the textbook Exercises in Beginning Ear Training used by all incoming freshmen. After graduate school, he continued teaching as an Associate Professor at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. In addition, he served as the assistant conductor/chorus master for the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera and music director of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony.<
Dombek began writing choral music for his church choirs and eventually released a record of his works on the Enharmonic Records label performed by the Evangelical Community Church Choir in Bloomington, Indiana. He has also written numerous arrangements for the Santa Barbara Choral Society, including a “choreographic” medley of Beatles’ songs, Love, Love, Love, performed by the Society and their orchestra and danced by the State Street Ballet in the historic Granada Theater in Santa Barbara. Since 2016, Dombek has served as the
Composer-in-residence for Nathan Kreitzer and the Quire of Voyces affiliated with Santa Barbara City College.
