CoverLight the Darkness (Golow an Tewlder) [level: Easy]
Joel Snyder & Jane Kozhevnikova: Bio and other works
RELEASED: March 2023
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 1714 | price: $2.20
accompaniment: piano

“Golow an Tewlder" (Cornish for "Light the Darkness") is derived from the early Celtic language of Cornwall, spoken in the Southwestern corner of Britain and related to Welsh and Breton. In this lovely lullaby we are encouraged to be forces of light in an all too often dark world. Singable and sincere, with a delightful melody and supportive piano accompaniment. A sweet addition to any program.

Sleep, my dear one, sleep, my love,
Angels guard your sweet bed,
Fear not the darkness up above,
Golow an Tewlder.

Sleep, my dear one, sleep, my dove,
Midst the darkest, blackest night,
Your father’s arms will hold you tight,
Golow an Tewlder.

Sleep, my dear one, sleep, my child,
To the war we must go,
The darkness you will overthrow,
Golow an Tewlder.

Joel Snyder

“Light the Darkness” was written in the style of a British lullaby. The melody itself is written in the Mixolydian mode in order to evoke the otherworldly character of the song. The words “Golow an Tewlder” (Goh-Lah-oo Ahn Tool-der) are from  the early Celtic language of Cornwall, spoken in the Southwestern corner of Britain and related to Welsh and Breton. The Cornish words mean “Light the Darkness,” and it is meant as a command and an aspiration. We are to be forces of light in an all too often dark world.

This lullaby should be sung simply and lovingly, as you would to a child you wish to go to sleep. The tempo is relatively straight, but there are opportunities throughout where the singers can pause and breathe.
