CoverMingulay Boat Song [level: Easy]
arr. Stuart P. O’Neil: Bio and other works
RELEASED: March 2024
voicing: TBB | catalog number: SBMP 1782 | duration: 2'46 | price: $2.20
accompaniment: piano, flute

The melody for “Mingulay Boat Song” is based on a traditional Gaelic folk tune. The text was written by Sir Hugh S. Robertson, Scottish composer, and it speaks of a fisherman’s longing to return home to his family. Scored for TTB choirs with piano and flute, this gently lilting ballad is well suited for developing middle level ensembles as well as high school and collegiate level choirs. The haunting a cappella ending will keep your audience in suspense!

Heel y'ho boys / let her go boys

Bring her head round / into the weather

Heel y'ho boys / let her go boys

Sailing homeward / to Mingulay!

What care we boys / how white the Minch is?

What care we boys / of windy weather

when we know that / every inch is

sailing homeward / to Mingulay?

Wives are waiting / on the pier heads,

Gazing seaward / from the heather.

Pull her head 'round / and we'll anchor

Ere the sun sets / on Mingulay!

Sir Hugh S. Robertson (1872-1952)
