With a text by Jan Richardson, this work was commissioned in memory of schoolchildren whose lives were lost to gun violence. Dramatic musical motives intertwine with evocative lines of text, creating a powerful sense of longing and release that ultimately resolves in hope. Scored for mixed voices with moments of divisi, and an expressive piano accompaniment, this piece is deeply emotional and profoundly moving.

I have no cause
to linger beside
this place of death,

where life has left,
