She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night,
[a night of] cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
She walks in beauty.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired this nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
She walks in beauty.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent
The smiles that win, the tents that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
She walks in beauty this night!

A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
She walks in beauty.

Poem adapted by David W. Brewer

Lord Byron, an English poet and politician, is considered to be one of the leading figures of the Romantic movement. He is still regarded as one of the greatest of the English poets and is widely read to this day. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge (1801-1805) and was well traveled throughout Europe, especially in Italy, where he lived for seven years. He died of a fever in present day Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece in 1824.

The poem She Walks in Beauty is said to have been inspired by an event in Byron’s life in 1814. While attending a party in London, he was entranced by the beauty of Mrs. Anne Beatrix Wilmot (the wife of his first cousin), and the poem was composed that next morning. She Walks in Beauty is one of Lord Byron’s most recognized poems along with such works as Don Juan and Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.

Lord Byron George Gordon (1788-1824)
