CoverUkrainian River Song [level: Easy]
Roman Yakub: Bio and other works
voicing: SA(T)B | catalog number: SBMP 980 | duration: 2:30 | price: $2.50
accompaniment: piano

Excitement abounds here. Written in the style of a Ukrainian-Carpathian folk song, the driving rhythms of a vibrant folk dance are the mainstay of the piece. The lyric transliteration makes singing the short Ukrainian text easy; most the the text consists of energetic nonsense syllables.

Singers should approach this piece with a great deal of energy and excitement. Written in the style of a Ukrainian-Carpathian folk song, the strongest element of the piece lies in its driving rhythms.

The Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine are situated in the heart of Europe, and are home to many different ethnic groups of Eastern Slavic origins. The musical heritage of this region is rich in various influences of musical cultures: Hungarian, Romanian, Gypsy, Eastern European Jewish, as well as Ukrainian, Slovak and others. This music, in its turn, influenced the neighboring cultures. One of the most popular folk songs/dances is Kolomyika, its name derived from the town of Kolomyia. Although the Ukrainian River Song is not structurally and rhythmically a Kolomyika, it resembles the spirit of this popular dance. The instrumental part in the middle of the song is almost a precise quotation of the very famous original Kolomyika. Any instrument may be added to this part by doubling the melody. In addition, a low drum could add its impact on each beat.
