The Vacant Chair is a moving Civil War ballad depicting a family's grief at seeing the empty seat of their fallen son around the Thanksgiving table. Military "Taps" is woven into the arrangement and adds to the poignancy of the song, part provided in the score and highly recommended by the composer. A bluegrass band orchestration is also available for free from the composer at benlmnop@gmail.com. The piece was commissioned by the Des Moines Choral Society for their performance with Hal Holbrook in a multimedia program commemorating Iowa's role in the Civil War. Suitable for Memorial Day or Veterans Day. There is some simple 8-part divisi that is easily learned.
