A Blessing of the Hands ceremony prior to the start of a recent school year proved to be a moving experience, bringing to light the incredible power of our hands—hands that can heal, support, comfort, and give--and hands that can just as easily hurt or push away. It is my hope that this piece might inspire those who experience it to become more deeply committed to using their hands to extend compassion, love, and wholeness out into the world.

My intent when writing the piece was to be as inclusive as possible (brother, will you let them in? sister, will you let them in?...believing that symbolically, we are all brothers and sisters to each other). But I now understand that not everybody identifies as a brother or sister; in an effort to be as inclusive as possible, and provide an even more all-embracing message, I offer the following adaptations to that particular text.
