Joan Szymko (b.1957) pronounced SHIM-koh
With a catalog of over 100 choral works in print publication, Joan Szymko’s music is regularly performed across North America and abroad including performances at national and international choral festivals and competitions. She has presented sessions at both regional and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). Notably, her music has been presented on stage or in sessions at every ACDA National Conference since 2003. Szymko has been commissioned by professional, university, church, LGBTQ, children’s and all levels of community choirs. The ACDA recognized Szymko's lasting impact on the choral arts in North America by selecting her as a recipient of the prestigious Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission in 2010.
Szymko’s years of experience as a professional choral director animate her choral compositions; her embodied approach to singing and rhythm, dedication to storytelling and an insistence on quality texts all relate to her predilections as a conductor and are reflected in her diverse, distinctive choral compositions Utilizing a familiar musical vocabulary, Szymko composes works that are nonetheless fresh and engaging.
Joan Szymko lives and works in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She serves as a resident composer (since 1995) with Portland based NEA awardee Do Jump! Movement Theater, (Portland) creating underscoring for several major touring productions, earning praise from the New York Times for her “ethereal vocal music.” A dynamic conductor, she founded and directed Viriditas Vocal Ensemble (1994-2002), has served on the choral music faculty of Portland State University (2013-15) and led Aurora Chorus as Artistic Director for over 25 years. (1993-2020). As a visiting artist, Szymko workshops her compositions with choirs in a variety of educational and festival settings across the country and abroad.
