Within the Circles of Our LIves [level: Medium]
Giselle Wyers
| Giselle Wyers Choral Series
voicing: SSATB | catalog number: SBMP 1395 | duration: 4:25
| price: $2.05
accompaniment: a cappella
The profound text by Wendell Berry offers some possibilities for choirs wishing to add a bit of staging to their performance. The composer, reflecting on the text, uses ascending intervals of the fifth, sixth, and fourth as motives symbolic of a circle. At the conclusion, the sopranos having been together throughout, now divide into two parts, echoing each other to add to the drama of the ending. This is a cleverly constructed composition that will delight singers as they bring it to life.

Woven Together [level: Medium]
Jacob Narverud
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 1151 | duration: 6:30
| price: $2.35
accompaniment: piano; opt. inst. ens.
Based on a pentatonic Sacred Harp tune, this piece affords several performance options beyond SATB. The introduction could allow a procession; a children’s chorus could sing one of the verses; a program insert could invite the audience join in on one verse. Composed for a massed choir event, it is that rare piece that can serve this purpose. The uplifting text advocates togetherness and thankfulness and speaks to all ages.

Ye Jaliya-o [level: Medium]
Joan Szymko
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 726 | price: $2.60
accompaniment: percussion
From the notes by the composer: I am an admirer of traditional West African music, with its direct simplicity and wonderful rhythmic complexity. I have composed an original piece of music with text excerpts from “The Pulse of Life” by Catherine De Vinck interwoven with the dominant Lambango lyric:
“Ye Jaliya-o, Allah le ka Jaliya da”
Oh music, God created music.
The “you are the heart, you are the sound....” “Pulse of Life” chant begins as an undercurrent that rises and falls until it overtakes the piece. The rhythms in this piece are clearly African influenced, as is its tonality. The raised fourth (C sharp) is characteristic of Sauta, one of the kora traditional tunings. The kora is a 21 s. Also available in SSA.

Zing Uh Boo Day [level: Medium]
Allen Koepke
voicing: SSA | catalog number: SBMP 1069 | duration: 3:30
| price: $2.25
accompaniment: piano
Liven up the action for your choir with this zinger of a piece. Composer/poet Koepke has created a strictly for fun bit of nonsense, providing us with a meaning-of-life spoof. A few nonsense syllables form the “profound” refrain as they answer life’s difficult questions. Rhythmic drive, high energy, three parts all the way, an upbeat piano adds to the mix. Singers will love to “zing” out on this one.
