Sulle Mulle [level: Medium]
arr. Alo Ritsing
| Baltic Series edited by Vance Wolverton
voicing: TTBB | catalog number: SBMP 182 | price: $2.15
accompaniment: a cappella
Vance Wolverton: The last thing I expected to find in Estonia was Barbershop-style singing, but that is exactly what "Sulle Mulle" is. The infectious dotted rhythm of the soprano melody is underlaid by an equally infectious rhythmic ostinato in the alto parts. "Sulle Mulle" should be sung with great gusto and highly exaggerated pronunciation for optimal effect. Sing it in the original language, or use the excellent English version.

piano accomp.: Mary Ellen Loose - J. Edmund Hughes
| Edith Copley Choral Series
voicing: TB | catalog number: SBMP 1029 | duration: 1:50
| price: $2.05
accompaniment: piano
This piece can do well on its own merit, or it can be joined by two others in a unique Shakespeare Suite, each piece being for a different voicing. To perform all three, divide the SATB choir, the women getting their turn first with Sigh No More Ladies (SBMP 1028); next the men perform Take, O Take Those Lips Away; and finally all join in with It Was a Lover and His Lass (SBMP 1030). Clever writing abounds for both the voices and the piano. Add a bit of staging to make the performance extra special.

Telescope mirrors in music what the Kate Wakeling created so skillfully in her composition of the poem. Just as the poem “revolves” around the fixed point of the letter O, Telescope uses the fixed point of a single pitch with the harmony embellishing and supporting that pitch.

The Dark Around Us, Come [level: Medium]
Giselle Wyers
| Giselle Wyers Choral Series
Digital Room Octavo
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 1528 | price: $1.75
accompaniment: piano
This setting of Wendell Berry’s evocative poem “The Dark Around Us Come” can be sung as a stand-alone piece, or as the completion of a set of pieces Giselle Wyers calls “Three Hymns for the Earth”: 1: “The Dark Around Us Come, 2: I Go Among Trees, and 3: “The Waking”.
In this poem, Berry describes an imaginary tribunal of all the elements and creatures of the earth, including humans: “light, leaf, foot, hand, and wing”. These living creatures meet in darkness- a darkness of spirit, or the literal darkness of a shadowed forest, to attempt reconciliation. Wendell Berry seems to suggest that humankind must come to “know” all of the earth and join in harmony with the planet as “One household high and low” so that "all the earth shall sing.” This piece embodies the sorrow of our failings to reconcile with the earth, but ends with a poignant hope and optimism, as is reflected in Berry’s simple yet radiant text. The composer hopes by singing this work, we will find a way towards “rejoicing mind and eye, rejoining known and knower."

The Gift to Sing [level: Medium]
Matthew Emery
| Jamie Hillman Choral Series
voicing: SATB | catalog number: SBMP 1663 | duration: c. 3’25”
| price: $2.60
accompaniment: piano
The Gift to Sing, the inaugural piece in the Jamie Hillman Choral Series, is a setting of the poem of the same name by revered African American poet and civil rights leader James Weldon Johnson. Matthew Emery’s (b. 1991) unique ability to tell a story through song is perfectly coupled with Johnson’s hopeful and inspiring words on the power of singing to overcome grief, strife, and adversity. The work utilizes a somewhat varied strophic form, though phrases are slightly varied and developed. Different textures are created so that each section presents the main theme, and various voices add counterpoint which cause the piece to blossom. An exciting choice for concert, festival, honor choir, competition, assembly, or Black History Month.
